Term 2, Issue #7 2023
As another Term draws to an end, we look back at all the wonderful events and activities that have been enjoyed, all the deep and meaningful teaching and learning that has taken place and all the gifts and talents each student brings to our community.
We have enjoyed the JAM Band. JAM stands for Just Add Music, and we all know when children and music unite there is a whirlwind of energy and excitement. From the feedback given, this is one event that is sure to come back to Catherine McAuley School.
We are excited to announce the safe arrival of Ms Crompton's baby. We are thrilled for the family and wish them all the joy in the world as they bond, care and nurture themselves and their little girl Sierra.
During Term 2, we have conducted our Small Mercies program. Over the last four Friday’s we have invited our Term 3 Reception intake to visit our school and become acquainted with staff and each other. They have enjoyed classroom activities and Recess. Small Mercies is also a time for our new Receptions to become familiar with the rules, routines and expectations of school. As we prepare for Term 3, we offer a warm welcome to all the new Reception students, and their families, to Catherine McAuley School. It’s an exciting time to be joining us and we are looking forward to getting to know you and working alongside you to ensure your child is happy and successful in their own right.
This Term, Week 10, all families will receive their child’s / ren’s Semester One school report. This is the first of two school reports issued each academic year. The report will inform you of your child's progress in an easy-to-understand manner. The report will include achievement and effort grades for all learning areas based around assessments and classroom tasks undertaken throughout Term 1 and 2. Please celebrate your child: they have worked hard and should be proud of their achievements thus far. In Term 3, all families have the opportunity to discuss the report with your child’s classroom teacher(s). However, if you feel there is something pressing you would like to address sooner, you are invited to make an arrangement to meet with your child’s teacher.
Students and staff have worked extremely hard this term. Student learning progress in literacy skills is very positive with Ms Philip reporting pleasing learning growth in Reading, Spelling and Writing. Students are also understanding more about operating from a growth mindset, their social and emotional well-being and the power of positive dispositions towards learning. Mrs Vandenberg has been working very hard with teachers and students to embed these positive learning messages into school life, every day.
As we head into the Term 2 school holidays, we would like to wish all CMS families a safe and restful break. See you when we return: Monday 24th July 2023.

Charities
Thank you to everyone who was able to contribute to St Vincent De Paul’s Can Drive, Empty Can Drive and CentaCare. The support never ceases to amaze. By giving, and giving so generously, we are collectively restoring hope and dignity to those who receive, giving back resilience. Please know, both St Vincent De Paul – Umes, and CentaCare – Donna, are extremely admiring of our giving nature and pass on their gratitude to you all.
Our Mercy charism simply illustrates the relationship between having the choice to show mercy and achieving justice. Having mercy or being merciful speaks of leniency and clemency. Thank you again for your tireless mercy that enables us to reach out to others.
The results of our Can Drive and Empty Can Drive will be published in Term 3’s newsletter. At this stage, it is extremely impressive!
‘Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work’ 2 Corinthians 9:6-8.
NAIDOC Week, Week 10
To start this very important week in our events calendar, we will gather as a whole school for Liturgy on Monday 3rd July 2023 at 8.50am in JHPAC. All are welcome. This will be hosted by our First Nations students and Ms. Connelly.
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for our community to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
Throughout Week 10, students across the school will enjoy a variety of activities raising awareness of inclusion and belonging to promote and support cultural diversity: learning how to live, love and appreciate all by understanding self and others better.
‘We are the body of Christ, and each one of us is a part of it,’ Paul writes the Corinthians. And as a part of the body, we have responsibilities — responsibilities to respect and encourage the other parts as we carry out the individual work God has called each of us to do.
Go well and may God bless you and be gracious to you, always.

APRIM
This term, the Reception students went on an excursion to the Farm Barn in Hahndorf as part of their Biological Science curriculum. The aim was to learn more about farm animals and other living things. The students furthered their learning by researching interesting facts about these animals and used their observations to write informative reports. Additionally, the children were able to practice their art skills by following step-by-step instructions to draw some of the animals.
Every year we celebrate all the wonderful stories that have been written during “Book Week”.
As a school we focus on award winning books and plan learning, activities and displays during the week of 19th-25th August in Term 3.
We are planning on having a Dress-up day during Book Week, so parents may want to start thinking about simple, fun costumes representing story characters for their children.
More details will be available next term.
It is with great delight that we announce that we have received funding from the Department Of Defence for a Defence School Mentor, (DSM) here at Catherine McAuley.
DSMs work to minimise the impact of mobility on education and build the capability of the school in supporting Defence students and their families.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NETBALL/SOCCER CARNIVAL REPORT
On Thursday 29th June, 89 year 4-6 students participated in the Regional Catholic Schools Netball/Soccer Carnival at Argana Park. The round-robin competition allowed students to develop their skills and knowledge of soccer and netball.
On a cold and at times slippery day, all students showed enthusiasm, discipline, teamwork, and a high level of skill to produce some great results.
The Netball teams started confidently, passing the ball around with accuracy and scoring some fantastic goals. Students showed excellent teamwork in defence to intercept many passes and displayed great teamwork to transfer the ball from defence to attack. As the day went on all teams grew in confidence and worked well to achieve many successful results. Well done everyone!!
The Soccer teams were extremely competitive in all games with all five teams experiencing success. The boy’s and girls’ teams managed to move the ball quickly to create many scoring opportunities with some great goals being scored and saved. It was fantastic to see students work together to create opportunities for team members to showcase their skills in a friendly environment.
All the boys and girls enjoyed the day and are to be congratulated on their fine sportspersonship during all matches. Thank you to Katrina Timmins, Rebecca Thorvaldsson, Emily Komljenovic, Mitchell Wood, Mary-Anne Hayward, Sarah Roberts, Glenn Niegut, Shelley Enders, Adam Marafioti, Natasha Coplestone and the many other parents that attended on the day for their help and support during the carnival.
